Neocities

09 January 2025

I first heard of neocities about a year ago, and I made this site in July. I spent a lot of time messing about with the layout, and not so much time actually putting anything out there. Anyway, that changes today with my first blog post.
I've always felt very uncomfortable with personal writing, though I can't quite put my finger on why. Perhaps it's the vulnerability of it. I'd much rather write an impersonal analysis on a book than anything that contains my opinion. I think it come from a fear of ridicule, which is pretty much impossible to avoid in most online spaces. Anything genuine or sincere gets labelled "cringe" and suddenly everyone is allowed to make fun of it. I might have to write a full blog post on "cringe culture" because I have a lot of feelings about it (mostly negative).
That brings me to why I decided to create a website. For one, it's much more private, even though just about anyone can access it if they look for it, but very few will. So lucky you, reader! I want to have a "home" on the internet, but somewhere like Instagram or Twitter is far too accessible. Also the people who run such sites are kind of evil.
I'm sitting my Leaving Cert this year (yikes) and I need to get better at personal essays, and this is a pretty good way to do that! I am really not looking forward to the exams, but I need a good grade in English to get into my dream university.
I love looking through others' neocities sites, there are so many beautifully creative people on here, and I hope my tiny blog can be part of a bigger community.
Lots of love,
